Uhhh, this is kind of embarrassing, but despite having used UNIX systems for ages, I wasn't aware that tset(1) has a "reset" alias?

reset - reinitialization
When invoked as reset, tset sets the terminal modes to “sane” values: [..]

(I did know about "stty sane" but usually ended up killing terminals that were messed up in a way where that didn't help.)

@galaxis No clue when I learned about it, but it's been a perfect weapon against completely garbled and useless terminals in 99% of all cases.
